The Santa Monica College Musical Theatre Workshop will present “Give My Regards to Broadway” Dec. 18-20. The production kicks off the final pre-holiday weekend with a musical theatre revue showcasing songs from the great hits of Broadway. The song and dance extravaganza will feature works from musicals by Sondheim, Gershwin, Lopez, Schoenberg, Kander, Schwartz, and other composers.

The workshop, a coproduction of the SMC Theatre Arts and Music departments, is directed by SMC Theatre Arts Department chair Perviz Sawoski, with music direction by SMC adjunct music instructor Gary Gray.

Performances are scheduled at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18; 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20, in the Theatre Arts Studio Stage, located on the SMC main campus at 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica. Late arrivals seated at management discretion. No video feed offered in lobby area.

Holiday Student Art Sale


Santa Monica College's 38th Annual Holiday Student Art Sale, featuring a wide range of works in various media, will be a three-day event again this year. The sale will be held Friday, Dec. 11, through Sunday, Dec. 13. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.


The sale will be held at the Pete & Susan Barrett Art Gallery, located at the SMC Performing Arts Center on Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th Street, Santa Monica. Ample free parking will be available.

The sale is a once-a-year opportunity to buy some truly unique works of art – including ceramics, blown glass, jewelry, prints, and more – and offers an excellent selection to satisfy both holiday and year-round gift needs.

Proceeds from the sale help support the SMC Art Department.

SANTA Monica Pub Crawl

The 7th Annual SANTA Monica Pub Crawl returns for its 7th year on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015 at 5 p.m. More than 30 local bars and restaurants from across the city will come together to raise money for those in need through a partnership with the Westside Food Bank. Last year, nearly 6,000 crawlers celebrated the season at the city's most cherished holiday event by filling the streets as joyous Santas, reindeer and elves. In the last six years, the Pub Crawl has raised nearly $100,000 for the Westside Food Bank for those in need during the holidays.


The SANTA Monica Pub Crawl features four unique routes including Wilshire Blvd., Main Street, The Pier and Third Street Promenade, all offering crawlers with wristbands food and drink specials such as $3 beers, $5 wells and $5 shots as part of the festivities. Tickets are $12 and are available at   


"Westside Food Bank is proud to be the beneficiary agency for the SANTA Monica Pub Crawl for the 7th year in a row," says Genevieve Riutort, Chief Development Officer for the Westside Food Bank. "The event has helped to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in our community while also giving people the opportunity to make a difference while having a great time. In the past five years, the SANTA Monica Pub Crawl has made it possible for Westside Food Bank to distribute about a quarter million more pounds of food for local families in need. That makes a huge impact, especially during the holidays."


SANTA Monica Pub Crawl participants are encouraged to dress in Santa/holiday attire so the streets of Santa Monica are filled with merry cheer. An Instagram contest (#SMPCSpirit) will award the crawler with the most impressive holiday gear with a special prize including gifts from a number of participating bars and restaurants. Groups of five or more can sign up their team to participate in the beloved Santa Scavenger Challenge scavenger hunt for more changes to win. 


In order to participate, crawlers must follow three easy steps - choose a route, download the map and go to their official route starting location to collect their wristband.  The pub crawl includes special offerings all night including $5 Stella drafts at participating locations. Other special offers include $3 slices at Joe's Pizza, $4 Bud Light draft beers at Rusty's Surf Ranch, $6 Chicken Quesadillas at Enterprise Fish Co., $5 Santa Monica Brew Works 310 beer and half price flatbreads at Del Frisco's Grille, buy one-get one soft-serve at Tasti D-Lite and more. The Official After Party will be held for an additional fee at Wokcano Santa Monica with food and drink specials, giveaways, DJs, dancing, photo booth and more fun holiday festivities.

The Santa Monica College Theatre Arts Department is pleased to present “M. Courage”Dec. 4-13 at the Theatre Arts Main Stage on the SMC main campus, 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica.


In this game of war – based on Bertolt Brecht’s “Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder”(“Mother Courage and Her Children”) – a true business woman who sells supplies, provisions, and liquor from her canteen wagon for a vigorous profit plays the armies on both sides of the conflict. To preserve her capitalistic spirit, she will pay a heavy price. The SMC production is directed by Terrin Adair.


Show times are 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec 4 and 11, and on Saturday, Dec. 5 and 12. Matinees are at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6, and on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 12 and 13. A preview is scheduled at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3.

Art Los Angeles Contemporary

Art Los Angeles Contemporary, the International Contemporary Art Fair of the West Coast, returns for its seventh edition on January 28–31, 2016, at The Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, the pivotal weekend in Los Angeles's contemporary art calendar. Drawing over 15,000 visitors in 2015, ALAC continues to reflect the pace of Los Angeles as the fastest growing art market, with rapid expansion as an international force in the art world.
The 2016 edition of ALAC brings together over 70 top established and emerging galleries from around the world, hailing from over ten countries and a dozen art capitals. Many of these galleries show for the first time at ALAC, including Bureau (New York), Christian Andersen (Copenhagen), Galerie Kadel Willborn (Düsseldorf), Kayne Griffin Corcoran (Los Angeles) and MOT International (London). ALAC breaks tradition by introducing a new section titled Freeways, which presents emerging galleries under four years old showing up to two artists per booth. ALAC is pleased to announce an expanded talks and lectures program. For the fair's 2016 edition, Marc LeBlanc, Curator of Events & Programming, organizes a robust calendar of public programs that address the changing conditions for artmaking in Los Angeles. Through a series of talks, film screenings, and performances, key figures in the city's contemporary art scene share how they are "coping with tomorrow," and explore the resulting narratives of survival that emerge in art. Participants include Norman Klein, critic and urban historian at California Institute of the Arts, artists Charlie White and Andrea Zittel, and project space JOAN. More artists, critics, curators, and gallerists will be announced as they are confirmed. All talks and lectures are held in the ALAC Theatre, Friday, January 29–Sunday, January 31, 2016.
Making its debut at ALAC 2016 is the fair's dedicated section of Independent Publishing. Curator Miriam Katzeff, co-founder of Primary Information, the celebrated nonprofit organization based in Brooklyn, brings together artists, bookstores, and independent publishers from around the world, including Badlands UnlimitedHasslaInventory PressPrimary Information, and Printed Matter, Inc., New York; DoPe Press and Golden Spike, Los Angeles; and Rainoff, New York/Sydney, presenting new and recently reissued art books, editions, records, and other printed projects. More section participants will be announced as they are confirmed.
ALAC 2016 marks the release of the Art Los Angeles Reader, the fair's platform for established and emerging voices in art writing. The free art newspaper engages critically with art on-site and beyond, placing rigor and criticism alongside humor and celebration. Its forthcoming second issue includes themed features and monographic essays by Los Angeles writers whose combined credits include ArtforumArt in AmericaCabinetFrieze, and LA Weekly, as well as printed artist commissions and interviews with artists, curators and gallerists. The Reader is published by Fair Grounds Associates on the occasion of Art Los Angeles Contemporary and edited by Tracy Jeanne Rosenthal.

Barker Hangar is a historic arts venue in Santa Monica, California. With over 40,000 square feet of exhibition space and soaring 40-foot ceilings, the venue is uniquely positioned to create an enjoyable experience for fair attendees. The venue is located at the Santa Monica Airport, one of the nation's premier airports for private jet travel, located in close proximity to nearby beach hotels, world-class restaurants, and renowned contemporary art museums and private collections.
Tim Fleming has been the director of Art Los Angeles Contemporary since its inaugural edition in 2010. Fleming has directed and produced some of the top contemporary art shows in the United States. After graduating from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago he served as director of project gallery Seven Three Split, and served on the team that developed The Stray Show, the ancillary art fair of Art Chicago dedicated to alternative gallery spaces. Fleming is the founder of Fair Grounds Associates, producers of Art Los Angeles Contemporary, and the publisher of The Reader, the platform for established and emerging voices in art writing.
Miriam Katzeff is a curator based in New York. Katzeff is the co-founder of Primary Information, the Brooklyn-based nonprofit devoted to the preservation and support of critical texts and projects from the 1960s to the present. The organization emphasizes the conceptual practice of using publications as an exhibition space. Katzeff co-founded Primary Information with artist James Hoff in 2006. She previously worked as director of Team Gallery, New York, and has organized projects and events at MoMA PS1, White Columns, and Swiss Institute, New York; Perez Art Museum Miami; and ICA Philadelphia.
Marc LeBlanc is a writer and curator based in Los Angeles. Formerly the owner of 1R Gallery, Chicago, LeBlanc's recent gallery group exhibitions include Unfinished Season (2014), Galerie Nagel Draxler, Cologne; Palimpsest (2013), Galerie Kavi Gupta, Berlin; and Anteriors (2011), Kunstverein am Rosa-Luxemberg Platz, Berlin. LeBlanc organized Passages, a two-part video screening featuring artists' videos, music videos, visuals and films made digital, for Art Los Angeles Contemporary 2015.
Tracy Jeanne Rosenthal is a writer and artist based in Los Angeles.  She is the author of the chapbooks Ri Ri (Re)Vision (Publication Studio) and This Is The ENDD (Wilner Books) and has performed at the New Museum and The University of Chicago, among others. Rosenthal edited the first issue of The Reader for Art Los Angeles Contemporary 2015. Her criticism appears regularly in Art in America, CARLA, and Rhizome.
