Demolition Kicks Off at Santa Monica Place: 1) Construction crews bring down the 1980s-era “Santa Monica Place” sign on Thursday. March 17, 2008. The Santa Monica Place sign crashed down and created a highly visual feat of pyrotechnic de-construction.2) (left to right) Randy Brant, Vice President from Macerich, Mayor Pro Tem Richard Bloom, and City Manager Lamont Ewell hit the demolition button. 3) Santa Monica City Manager Lamont Ewell gives a welcoming speech. 4,5) The UCLA marching band plays along the Third Street Promenade. 6) The crowed watches the firework show. 7) Construction crews survey the aftermath. ~ This high-profile event launches the 18-month process of creating the new, all open-air recycling of the old shopping mall, which closed in January and is scheduled to open as the new Santa Monica Place in fall 2009. Sustainability and green-building practices are a key part of the project’s design and construction. The new Santa Monica Place will be a fresh, modern, three-level retail and dining destination, with a signature, rooftop dining deck with great views of the ocean.

HOT UNDER THE COLLAR: Welder Rafael Cardenas, of United Storm Water Inc., attaches a metal screen to the storm drain at Ocean and Hollister avenues on Monday. Crews will be affixing screens to all the storm drains throughout Santa Monica. The primary reason for the work was to stop the flow of trash and other waste into Santa Monica Bay. Street runoff is commonly cited as a major source of oceanic pollution off the Southern California coast.

Assembly crew from Victory Outreach (a Christian ministry)  contracted by Classic Tents, raise up the tent on Saturday were the 2007 Spirit Awards will be staged. The Spirit Awards is a celebration of indie film and indie filmmakers and will air live on IFC on Saturday, February 24th. Film Independent's Spirit Awards is a celebration honoring films made by filmmakers who embody independence and who dare to challenge the status quo. Televised in millions of homes and covered internationally by the press, the Spirit Awards has become the vanguard event in independent film, recognizing the achievements of independent filmmakers and promoting independent film to a wider audience.

The house is part of the Winterlit Holiday Celebration, "Best Gift Ever"  a community gift drive to collect presents. The gifts will be distributed to the Santa Monica Police Activities League (PAL).
