Installation at the Third Street Promenade promoting Discovery channal's revolutionary new series “Serengeti” premiering Sunday August 4 at 8pm.

Discovery Channel travels to the vast, nearly untouched plains of Tanzania in SERENGETI, a new innovative six-part series highlighting the majestic animals and their day-to-day lives living together. Created and produced by Emmy®-winner Simon Fuller (“American Idol,” “So You Think You Can Dance”) and directed and produced by Emmy®-winning wildlife filmmaker John Downer (“Penguin: Spy in The Huddle”), the six-part series gives unrivaled access to one of the most pristine and unspoiled corners of the Africa. Featuring a lush original score and narrated by Academy Award®-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, the groundbreaking series follows the heartwarming stories of a cast of African wildlife including lions, zebras, baboons and cheetahs over the course of a year, showcasing the dramatic moments that make each day of survival on the Serengeti a feat.

SERENGETI premieres on SUNDAY, AUGUST 4 at 8:00pm ET/PT on Discovery with new episodes airing subsequent Sundays. The first episode will be presented commercial free. Viewers can also watch episodes and access exclusive bonus content on the Discovery GO app, free with their paid TV subscription.

Soon the season of plenty will begin to fade and food will be harder to come by, putting the animals of the Serengeti to the ultimate test. With new arrivals and unexpected problems, old foes resurfacing and dangerous encounters at nearly every turn, the Serengeti will demand courage from all who call it home. In Serengeti, the world’s most captivating animals try to survive in the beautiful, demanding lands of Northern Africa, stopping at nothing to protect their offspring and prove their worthiness to their tribe.

From Kali the lioness and Shani the Zebra, to Zalika the Hyena and many more, each species has their own unique story, whether dealing with their enemies or desperately searching for prey. Kali makes a big mistake and is now left completely alone to fend for herself and her cubs– an almost impossible task in the African plains. The series also features Tembo, a young male elephant struggling to take the next step on his journey into adulthood, as well as Nalla, the family matriarch juggling to lead the herd and be a mother. Across the Serengeti, Bakari the Baboon looks to honor the memory of his lost love by fiercely protecting her orphaned child. SERENGETI gives viewers a front row seat to witness how the animal experience isn’t so different from our own.

Collaborating for the first time, Fuller and Downer worked together on Serengeti for several years. Using a photographic and highly stylistic approach, their team employed innovative filming techniques in some of Africa’s most treasured regions, painting the ultimate portrait of survival in SERENGETI. Set to the backdrop of original music by Will Gregory with vocals by artists such as Lola Lennox, this television experience combines Africa’s unimaginable beauty with its equally unforgiving brutality, highlighting daily challenges of life on the Serengeti.

This landmark series is created and produced by Fuller and directed and produced by Downer. Nancy Daniels and Howard Swartz serve as executive producers for Discovery Channel.

SERENGETI is made by XIX Entertainment and John Downer Productions and was commissioned for BBC TV by Tom McDonald, Head of Commissioning, Natural History and Specialist Factual.

Extinction Rebellion

Extinction Rebellion Los Angeles members demonstrate at the Santa Monica Pier, Friday, July 26, 2019. XRLA intends to spark and sustain a spirit of collective, creative rebellion which will enable much-needed changes in our political, economic, and social landscape. XRLA works with and beside cells in other U.S. cities and seeks to change the national consciousness to become one based on conservation of our ecosystems. XRLA believes in fostering cooperation within our citizenry to quickly reach the goal of living sustainably within our natural environment as a part of it, not apart from it. We work to transform our society into one that is compassionate, inclusive, kind, sustainable, equitable, and interpersonally connected. Additionally we endeavor to mobilize and train local organizers in LA municipalities outside of the City of LA to work with their local communities to develop, using the XR framework, tools they need to address Los Angeles' deeply rooted problems as they relate to the threats created by global warming.

Pianist Murray Hidary live-to-headphones 'Silent" MindTravel piano concert at #SantaMonicabeach, Friday, July 26, 2019.

MindTravel is an immersive musical experience that takes place in iconic theaters and beautiful outdoor spaces. In his live performances, composer and pianist Murray Hidary transports audiences on a journey that is at once expansive and transformative.

Music is at once primalyet aspirational, evolutionary. It satisfies our deepest needs while raising us to our highest sense of self. With the piano, Murray creates real time compositions. These improvisational explorations are inspired by ideas from the worlds of theoretical physics as well as mystical traditions.

The music acts as metaphor for quantum phenomena such as Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle. As an improvisation, there is a certain spontaneous probability in the music that one note will sound over another. This probabilistic construct creates an environment for balancing expectation with nostalgia, anticipation with sentiment, the probable with the unknown.

The imagery shown in tandem with the music are all abstract photographs (without photoshop) taken of everyday common objects. The camera becomes the medium through which the mystery and beauty inherent in everyday things that we take for granted are revealed. In this sense, the work challenges the limitations that physical form imposes on perception. Material and form are dissolved and with it our assumptions, associations and imposed meanings dissolve too.

In this way, light is used to penetrate the essential core of matter, and matter’s meaning to us.
Imagine placing a leaf into a river with the strike of the first note of the piano.

The music develops, the journey of the leaf takes off. And while, like the leaf, we perceive our lives to exist within this apparent flow of time, this image soon reveals time’s illusory nature. As the French philosopher Merleau-Ponty explained, that our sense of this temporal flow comes from “...our surreptitiously putting into the river a witness of its course.” Perhaps time is not what we think it is. Einstein said that, “the past, present and future are only illusions, even if stubborn ones ”. Perhaps there is an opportunity to disappear time and, with that, our selves.

MindTravel is an exploration into that possibility. The imagery is meant to be viewed as well as not viewed just as the music is meant to be listened to and not listened to.

The Lobster

The Lobster on the Santa Monica Pier celebrates their 20th Anniversary on July 22, 2019.

Locals from decades past remember 'The Lobster' as a tiny shack that turned out 120 variations of seafood treats. Step back to the past and live the memories...

The original "The Lobster" opened in 1925, but it was the dreams of a dishwasher named Mateo Castillo that worked his way up to owner in 1950, that established "The Lobster" as the 'Seafood Shack' so sought popular through the 50's, 60's and 70's.

A family owned and operated venue, the modest structure only belied the strong attraction of location and real seafood. Their success was service and good food. A quality that holds true today. Rose Freeman purchased the property in the 80's. In the mid 80's, The Lobster closed its doors, leaving the property vacant for a decade.

"The Lobster" has long been an unofficial historical landmark, nearly as recognizable as the Santa Monica Pier sign. The original restaurant was built in 1923, and remained open until 1985. The 900 square foot seafood market style restaurant was very popular with the local Santa Monica residents and Pier visitors. A constant out the door was a tribute to it's popularity. The restaurant had a menu that had over 60 fresh seafood items. The seating capacity was only 30 seats, most of which were countertop seating around the outside perimeter.

The menu is classic American Seafood featuring whole live Maine lobsters. Guests can sit at any seat in the restaurant or bar area and enjoy 180 degree views of the spectacular Pacific Ocean, accented by it's breathtaking sunsets, even celebrate the sea spun sunset phenomena called the 'Green Flash'. The terrace provides fresh coastal air for those who love to dine outdoors. At night, "The Lobster" enjoys the Santa Monica Pier aglow at it's feet. "The Lobster" re-opened with wonderful reviews. Now years later, "The Lobster" has proved to be a memorable location to enjoy.

"The Lobster" stands as a tribute to the family that built its reputation. The remaining original structure within the foundation and walls of the main entrance and footprint still stand at the corner of Ocean Ave. and the Pier. "Established in 1923", recessed in the corner stone, greets guests in the spirit and heritage that only belongs to "The Lobster".
